Start Business Development Before You Qualify as a Solicitor

Nobody will ask you to bring in a client during your QWE. Your supervisor wants the research right and the deadline met. So hereโ€™s this weekโ€™s case: Start Business Development Before You Qualify as a Solicitor. What clients buy takes years to build, and the clock starts earlier than most people think.

The Legal Services Consumer Panelโ€™s 2026 tracker surveyed 3,802 recent users of legal services in England and Wales. The most common answer to how they chose their provider was that they or a family member had used it before (21%). Next came a recommendation from family or friends (18%). Roughly four in ten people picked a lawyer through a relationship that existed before they needed one.

Paragraph 8.9 of the SRA Code of Conduct for Solicitors says that when serving the public, you donโ€™t make unsolicited approaches to members of the public to advertise your services, unless theyโ€™re current or former clients. Cold pitching isnโ€™t the model. New work grows from reputation and relationships, and you can start on both now.

Stay in touch with your cohort. Your study group and the paralegal at the next desk will be in house counsel or running firms in ten years. Theyโ€™ll remember who checked in when nobody needed anything.

Ask to help on a pitch. Research a prospective client or help pull together a credentials document. Youโ€™ll learn what clients care about before they hire a firm.
Learn the business behind the file. Read the annual report of a client whose matter youโ€™re working on. It changes the questions you ask, and supervisors notice.

Being visible gets you noticed. Trust gets you recommended.

The first part is about being someone worth finding. Give people visible evidence of how you think, because nobody can recommend work theyโ€™ve never seen.

The second part is slower. Every referral is someone lending you their reputation, and building trust comes down to small habits, like replying when you said you would and being the same person in every room.

It can also go in a moment. A friend of mine caught their business partner in a lie after months of building something together, and it changed how they saw the whole partnership. Trust can be lost in an instant, and one broken confidence can quietly close doors you never knew were open.

You donโ€™t need a client list this year. You need a handful of people who trust you enough to say your name when it matters.
